Our History of Serving Members Since 1942
Downriver CU was organized on January 29, 1942 by a select group of employees from the Great Lakes Steel Corporation. At that time, providing a safe place to save money was one of the most important reasons for establishing the credit union.
What began as a small financial cooperative has grown into a community-focused credit union serving members across Wayne and Monroe Counties.

| 1942 | Opened in the Union Local as Great Lakes Steelworkers Federal Credit Union. |
| 1943 | With $3,400 in assets and 130 members, expanded eligibility to include all workers of Great Lakes Steel Corporation and their families. |
| 1960 | Built the main office at 4320 W. Jefferson Ave. in Ecorse, Michigan. |
| 1982 | Changed name from Great Lakes Steelworkers Federal Credit Union to Downriver Community Federal Credit Union. |
| 2003 | Opened the Woodhaven Office at 18707 West Rd. |
| 2004 | Merged with Detroit Marathon Employees Federal Credit Union. |
| 2004 | Moved the Lincoln Park Office to its current location at 1262 Dix Highway. |
| 2008 | Merged with Wyandotte Community Federal Credit Union. |
| 2015 | Reached $142 million in assets and served more than 16,000 members. |
| 2019 | Construction began on the new Southgate Office. |
| 2020 | Opened the Southgate Office, located at 15261 Trenton Rd. |
| 2022 | Received NCUA approval to expand membership eligibility to all those who live, work, worship, or go to school in Wayne or Monroe Counties. |
